Flock of Influence

2016
paper, plaster, wire mesh, acrylic

Flock Of Influence is an 80’ permanent installation made up of 86 hand sculpted birds in the foyer of Crow’s theatre. The project started as a discussion about a donor wall in the foyer of the theatre. I had offered to make birds that would represent various levels of donor. The concept changed to a sculpture that would be a tribute to Jim and Sandra Pitblado. The motif of a flock of birds came to symbolize the flock of donors that have followed Jim and Sandra’s support of the theatre.

The sculpture hangs overhead so I wanted it to feel lite. I started to play with paper as a medium for the birds. I wanted it feel as if paper were blowing through the space. The birds are made of cotton rag paper reinforced with wire mesh. The paper was dipped multiple times in plaster and then covered with an acrylic. The birds were left white and then lit with programmable led lights.
